Jammu Medical College Rusticates 10 Students After Clash Over 'The Kerala Story'
The clash reportedly started when some students uploaded scenes from 'The Kerala Story' on a WhatsApp study group, with differing opinions on its worthiness. The disagreement escalated into a physical fight between two groups of students in the hostel, involving outsiders as well. While five injured students were taken to the hospital, they were discharged later.
An FIR has been registered regarding the incident, and the rusticated students include individuals from both sides of the fight. Out of the 10 students, five are from Jammu province and five from Kashmir.
The decision to rusticate the students came after a report by the wardens of the boys' hostel, which has also been forwarded to the college's disciplinary committee. The committee has been assigned the task of producing its own report within a week.
To ease the prevailing tension in the undergraduate and postgraduate hostels, the college administration has formed groups comprising senior heads of department, faculty members, the chief provost, and wardens. These groups will visit and interact with the students daily between 8 pm and 10 pm over the next four days, aiming to foster communication and understanding. Additionally, the college has increased the number of security personnel and supervisors in the hostels to ensure 24x7 security.
GMC authorities have also requested the Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu, to deploy additional police personnel around the hostel and college premises as a precautionary measure to avoid any potential law and order problems.
The incident highlights the importance of promoting peaceful dialogue and fostering a respectful environment within educational institutions.
