IPL 2023: Virat Kohli's batting template replaced by Impact Players, says Tom Moody
New Delhi: Tom Moody, the former coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, has said that the Indian Premier League (IPL) has moved on from Virat Kohli's batting template. According to Moody, teams are now focusing on impact players rather than relying on one individual to carry the team on his shoulders.
Moody made the comments while speaking to reporters about the upcoming IPL 2023 season. He said that while Kohli is still a great player, teams are now looking for a more balanced approach to their batting line-ups.
"There was a time when Virat Kohli was the one player that teams would build their entire batting line-up around," said Moody. "But now, with so many talented players in the IPL, teams are looking for impact players who can come in and change the game with just a few big shots."
Moody also said that this shift in focus towards impact players has been evident in the IPL auctions over the past few years. Teams are now willing to spend big money on players who can score quickly and provide a much-needed boost to the team's run-rate.
"Look at the players who have been picked up in the auctions recently," said Moody. "You have players like Andre Russell, Hardik Pandya, and Kieron Pollard who can turn a game on its head with just a few big hits. These are the types of players that teams are looking for now."
Moody's comments come as a blow to Kohli, who has been struggling to find form in recent IPL seasons. The Royal Challengers Bangalore captain has been criticised for his slow strike rate and inability to finish games for his team.
With the IPL 2023 season just around the corner, it remains to be seen how teams will approach their batting line-ups. Will they continue to rely on one or two star players, or will they focus on building a more balanced team with impact players throughout the line-up?
